Power Songs

Power Songs

•

During this solstice, while burning the Yule log in the bonfire, we sang this song. This year it sounded especially powerful. I could not find these words elsewhere on the internet, so I am recording them here - so they exist: Let there be words, whoever had words, I myself have strong words: I held back the Daugava, Drove a stake into its middle. They hit me, they struck me Like an oaken log; They could not hit, could not strike, As if into a piece of steel. Three layers of golden belt Around that lush oak tree A snake bit, a bee stung Not a leaf did tremble. The envious envy me, the sorcerer curses me, They cannot destroy me. How can one destroy That whom God helps. Build, dear God, a strong fence Around my body! Build, dear God, a strong fence Around my soul! Build, dear God, a strong fence Around the place of my home! Cover, dear God, my homestead With a silver cloak! All forests are full of spirits, All roads full of keys. With God’s help I want to pass through everything. With God’s help I can pass through everything.
